Errors after install

Hi all,
I'm new to this list. I've searched the archives to see if my problem
has come up before (which it has), however, the resolutions given
weren't complete, or didn't apply to my problem.
I'm having some issues trying to run nessus after installing from
source. When I try to run nessusd, I get the error:
nessusd: error while loading shared libraries: libnasl.so.2: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
Some of the suggestions I saw in the archive were to make sure that
/usr/local/lib was in the /etc/ld.so.conf file and run ldconfig. When
I do that, ldconfig says that it can't find the libraries that are in
the /usr/local/lib.
I've installed all of the source files from the nessus website, as
instructed in their install instructions. The install seemed to go
off without a hitch, but execution is a no-go.
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. This is on a laptop running Fedora Core 3 (if that makes any
difference) ;-).
