I have just upgraded my server to the latest version last night, which I see
has separate settings for the Nmap wrapper.
I am doing a little trial and error with timings and so forth and everything
seems to be going well.

Cheers & Beers to you George! Thanks very much for your help.

You don't say which port scanner you're using. The nmap port scanner
has options to control how long it spends on a given host -- look at
"Timing policy", "Host timeout", and the like. In addition,
plugins_timeout should limit the time taken by *any* plugin.
